What is a Sentence?

1. A drives he car.              

2. He drives a car.

The words are arranged in such a way in sentence 1 that it does not convey the complete sense.

But, in sentence 2 the words are arranged in a way that conveys a completer sense.

 A sentence is a group of words that are arranged in a way to convey complete sense. 

Class 5 English Grammar Types of Sentences

Sentences are of five types (5) in English according to meaning or theme.

1. Declarative Sentence:

When a speaker declares or states a fact, a plan, or an argument through a speech or sentence, it is called Declarative Sentence. It ends with a Full stop.

A declarative sentence is also called an Assertive sentence or statement.

Example:

1. Ravi is playing football.

2. They had been waiting for two hours.

3. She won the match.

4. They are not going to the cinema.

5. The children do not swim in the pond.

6. He did not tell a lie.

7. I have no money.

The Types of Declarative Sentences.

A declarative sentence or Assertive sentence or statement is divided into two categories.

1. Affirmative: He plays football.

2. Negative: He does not play football.

The pattern of Declarative sentences.

Pattern 1:

How to turn the Declarative sentence into a Negative

Question: She had won the match. (Affirmative) 

Answer: She had not won the match. (negative) (see the above pattern)

To form a negative sentence, ‘No’ is placed before ‘Noun’, and ‘Not’ is placed before’ Adjective’.

Example:

  • No man can live forever.
  • He is not faithful.

Auxiliary verbs: am, is, are, was, were, shall, will, have, has, had, should, could, would, may, can, could, might, must, dodoesdid.

To make a Negative, or Interrogative [‘dodoes (present tense)’, ‘did(past tense), must be used as an Auxiliary verb if the given sentence does not have any Auxiliary verb.

Example:

  • He invited you. (affirmative)
  • He did not invite you. ( Negative)
  • Did he invite you? ( Interrogative)

2. Interrogative Sentence: 

These sentences ask a question. An Interrogative sentence ends with a question mark (?).

Example:

1. Are you going to Kolkata?

2. Did they play chess?

3. Have they done the work?

4. Who are talking?

5. Why did she fail?

6. How old are you?

Types of Interrogative sentence

Types of Interrogative sentence is of two kinds.

1. Affirmative: Are you going to school?

2. Negative: Are you not going to school?

The pattern of the Interrogative sentence.

How to turn the declarative sentence into an interrogative.

Question: You are going to Kolkata. – Declarative sentence.

Subject = You

Auxiliary Verb = are

Main Verb = go (here going)

Object= Kolkata

Other elements of the sentence will remain the same.

Interrogative sentence pattern is = A.V + S + M.V + O ? (Given above)

Answer: Are you going to Kolkata? – Interrogative Sentence

In this way, we can change the statement or declarative sentence to interrogative sentence.

How to turn an interrogative sentence into a negative-interrogative sentence.

In a Negative-Interrogative sentence, ‘Not’ will be placed before Subject Noun but after Subject Pronoun.

Question: Is Ankita singing a song? (Interrogative)

Answer: Is not Ankita singing a song? ( Negative-Interrogative)

Question: Had you done it? (Interrogative)

Answer: Had you not done it?( Negative-Interrogative)

3. Imperative Sentence:

These sentence expresses a command, wish, make a request or suggestion,  or give some advice. An imperative sentence ends with a Full stop. ‘You’ will always be the ‘subject’ of the sentence and it remains an understood condition at the beginning.

Example:

1. (You) Shut the door. ( command)

2. Please give me a glass of water. ( request)

3. Do not run in the sun. ( ordered)

4. Let me do it. ( wish)

5. Let us go home. ( suggestion)

The pattern of Imperative sentence.

Pattern 1 :

Pattern 3: Imperative sentence with ‘Let’.

4. Optative sentence:

These sentences express ‘wish’ or ‘pray’. The sentence begins with  ‘May’ and ends with a Full stop.

Example:

1. May you live long.

2. May God bless you.

3. May the king live long.

4. May he not suffer in life.

5. May you not be disappointed in life.

The pattern of the Optative sentence.

Pattern1 :

5. Exclamatory sentence: 

These sentences express strong emotions or feelings. An exclamatory sentence ends with an exclamation mark (!).

5. Oh! What a nice view.
