What is a Pronoun?

(1) Ranit is a good boy. (2) Ranit reads in class 5.

(3) He loves to play cricket. (4) He stands first in the class.

In sentences (1) and (2) ‘Ranit’ has been repeated and that is a Noun. Repetition of the same noun is not good in English. In Sentences (3) and (4) ‘He’ is used in place of ‘Ranit’. So, here ‘He’ is called a Pronoun.

pronoun is a word used in place of a Noun.

Types of Pronouns

A pronoun may be of different kinds.

1. Personal Pronoun

Pronouns that stand for a person or thing are called Personal pronouns. For example, I, we, you, He, She, They, It, Me, Us, Him, Her, Them.

Example:

  • He gives you a pen.
  • They are playing football.
  • She told you that she was not ill.

Personal pronoun table according to person, number, subject, and object.

2. Possessive pronoun

Personal pronouns can refer to some possessions and are used in two forms. Mine, ours, yours, his, hers, and theirs, are called Possessive pronouns. No Noun is placed after them.

Example:

  • This pen is mine.
  • This garden is yours.
  • Ours is a small kingdom.
  • The bag is hers.
My, our, your, his, her, and their, are called Pronominal Adjectives or Possessive Adjectives when they are used before Nouns. They also denote some possessions.

Example:

  • This is my pen.
  • This is your garden.
  • Our kingdom is small.
  • That is her bag.

3. Self-pronoun

Myself, Ourselves, yourself, yourselves, Himself, Herself, itself, themselves, are called self – pronouns. self – pronouns have two different forms.

Reflexive Pronouns.

When the subject of a sentence reflects the same object, Self - Pronouns are used as objects and they are called Reflexive pronouns.

Example:

  • I hurt myself.
  • We enjoyed ourselves.
  • He killed himself.
Reflexive Pronouns are generally used after verbs or prepositions.

Forms of self–pronouns:

Emphatic Pronouns.

When the self–pronouns are used to emphasize the nouns or pronouns, Emphatic pronouns are used. 
  • myself did the work.
  • The boy himself was surprised at his success.
  • She made the dress herself.
Emphatic Pronouns are generally used after Nouns or pronouns.


Emphasizing Pronoun cannot stand alone as subject.


Example:
 

Myself saw him to go. (Incorrect)

I saw him to go. / I myself saw him to go. (correct)

Priya and myself will go to Kolkata. (Incorrect)

Priya and I will go to Kolkata./Priya and I myself will go to Kolkata.  (correct)

Reflexive pronouns and Emphatic Pronouns have the same forms. Their names are different according to their uses in sentences.

Example:

  • I myself wrote the letter. ( Emphatic pronoun)
  • She poured herself a cup of coffee. ( Reflexive pronoun)
  • The beggar hurt himself. ( Reflexive pronoun)
  • Ronita herself came to my house. ( Emphatic pronoun)
  • He set himself hard work. ( Reflexive pronoun)
  • They themselves spoke to the president. ( Emphatic pronoun)

When the subject is singular, the self–pronoun will be in singular ( i.e. self ), and when the subject is in plural self–pronoun will be in the plural (i.e. ‘selves’).

4. Demonstrative Pronoun

This, that, these, those, and such, are called Demonstrative Pronouns as they are used to point out the persons or things to which refer to. They are used alone at the beginning of a sentence.

Example:

  • This is my book.
  • That is a flower.
  • Those are flying birds.
  • Such are the things you should not do.
When This, that, these, those, such, are used with a noun, they are called Demonstrative Adjectives.

Example:

  • This book is mine.
  • That flower is yours.
  • Those birds are flying.
  • You should not do such things.

5. Indefinite Pronoun

When a pronoun refers to a person or thing in a general way, they are called an Indefinite pronoun. 

Examples:

some, any, none, many, everyone, anyone, everybody, nobody, somebody, anybody, everything, something, nothing, all, much, little, others.

Example:

  • Everyone praised him.
  • Do any of you like it?
  • None trust a liar.
  • Some of the mangoes were rotten.

6. Relative Pronoun

When a pronoun relates or joins two sentences, it is called Relative pronoun. Examples, who, whom, that, whose, as.

Example:

  • I know a man who is a doctor.
  • This is the pen that I lost yesterday.
  • It is Joti whom I love much.

7. Distributive Pronoun

When  pronoun refers to two persons or things separately, it is called Distribute Pronouns. Examples,Each, Either, Neither.

Example:

  • Each of the girls was present there.
  • Neither of them is honest.
  • Either of the boys is intelligent.

8. Reciprocal Pronoun

Each other and one another are called Reciprocal Pronouns as they set relations between one or more persons or things. Examples, Each other, one another.

Example:

  • They love each other.
  • They help one another.

9. Interrogative Pronoun

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions. Examples, Who, which, what, when, where, whose, whose.

Example:

  • Who am I?
  • What is your name?
  • Which book do you want?
  • Where do you love?
  • Whose bag is this?
  • When will he come?
who, whom, and whose both are examples of Interrogative Pronouns and Relative Pronouns. But their uses in sentences are different.
  • Who made this noise?  (Interrogative Pronouns)
  • I know the man who is your friend. (Relative Pronoun)
  • When will she go? (Interrogative Pronouns )
  • She had gone when the train came. (Relative Pronoun)
  • Whose book is this? (Interrogative Pronouns )
  • This is the man whose son is a doctor.  (Relative Pronoun)
