Summary of the Poem The Raven and the Fox NCERT Class 6

The poem is about a raven and a cunning fox named Reynard. The raven is sitting on a branch with a piece of food in its beak. The fox admires the raven’s feathers and flatters him, saying that if the raven could sing, he would be the king of the birds. Flattered and proud, the raven opens his beak to sing, and the food falls out. The fox grabs the food and laughs, teaching the raven that pride and believing in flattery can lead to foolish mistakes.

यह कविता रेनार्ड नामक एक कौवे और एक चालाक लोमड़ी के बारे में है। कौआ एक शाखा पर बैठा है और उसकी चोंच में भोजन का एक टुकड़ा है। लोमड़ी कौवे के पंखों की प्रशंसा करती है और उसे खुश करती है, यह कहते हुए कि अगर कौवा गा सकता है, तो वह पक्षियों का राजा होगा। खिलखिलाकर और गर्व से, कौआ गाने के लिए अपनी चोंच खोलता है, और भोजन बाहर गिर जाता है। लोमड़ी खाना पकड़ती है और हंसती है, कौवे को सिखाती है कि गर्व और चापलूसी में विश्वास मूर्खतापूर्ण गलतियों का कारण बन सकता है।

Let us speak

Narrate the poem in the form of a story. Give a different ending to the story.

This is a story about a clever fox named Reynard and Mr. Raven. One day, Mr. Raven was perched upon a limb, holding a piece of food in his beak. Reynard the Fox looked up and saw the food. He wanted it for himself. “Sir Raven,” he said in admiring tones, “you are a handsome bird. Such feathers! If you would only sing, the birds of these woods would call you King.”

Mr. Raven, flattered by the Fox’s words, forgot that his voice was just a croak. He opened his beak to sing, and the food fell to the ground. Reynard quickly snapped it up and laughed, “Ha-ha! Now you know, ignore sweet words that make you glow. Pride, my friend, is rather unwise.”

But in this different ending, Mr. Raven learns his lesson and decides to get back at Reynard. The next day, he found a shiny object and held it in his beak. When Reynard saw the shiny object, he wanted it. He praised the Raven again, hoping he would drop it. This time, the Raven pretended to be flattered but kept his beak closed. Reynard, frustrated, left without getting the shiny object. Mr. Raven felt proud of himself for not falling for the trick again.

Let us write

Now, write the story you narrated in the form of a conversation. (Remember to write only the actions for the Raven as he has food in his mouth and does not speak.)

Reynard: Good morning, Mr. Raven! You seem to be awake so early!
(Mr. Raven just nods his head)

Reynard: Oh, Mr. Raven, you look absolutely splendid today with those shiny feathers. If only you could sing, you would surely be the King of these woods!
(Mr. Raven puffs up with pride and opens his beak to sing. The food falls.)

Reynard: (quickly snatching the food) Ha-ha! Thank you, Mr. Raven! Pride, my friend, is rather unwise.
(Mr. Raven looks sad and flies away.)

The next day…

Reynard: Good morning, Mr. Raven! Is that a shiny object you have there? You look even more magnificent today! If you would sing for me, it would make my day!
(Mr. Raven keeps his beak closed and watches Reynard carefully.)

Reynard: Come on, Mr. Raven, won’t you sing for me?
(Mr. Raven shakes his head and holds onto the shiny object tightly.)

Reynard: (frustrated) Fine, keep your shiny object.
(Mr. Raven watches Reynard leave and then flies away, feeling proud of himself for not being tricked again.)
