একদা এক নদীর পাড়ে একটি বানর বাস করত। ঠিক নদীর মাঝখানে গাছগুলিতে সুমিষ্ট ও রসাল ফল ধরত নদীর তীর থেকে কিছুটা দূরে ছিল এক বিশাল শিলাস্তূপ।এটির এক অংশ ছিল জলের উপরে একদিন, সুস্বাদু ফলে আকৃষ্ট হয়ে বানরটি লাফ দিল শিলাস্তূপে পৌঁছতে আর সেখান থেকে আবার দ্বীপে লাফ দিত।

“তাহলে অতটা শক্ত নয়” সে মনে মনে বলল। শীঘ্রই সে গাছের ফলগুলি খাচ্ছিল কোনো পশু সেখানে ছিল না, তাই তার কোন বিপত্তি ছিল না । সুতরাং, সেই দ্বীপটায় বানর রোজ যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল।নদীর তীরে দূরে এক স্থানে একটি বড়ো কুমির তার স্ত্রী-র সঙ্গে বাস করতো।একদিন, সে দেখল বানরটি এক অদ্ভুত উপায়ে নদী পার হচ্ছে। সে তাঁর স্ত্রীকে বলল, “দেখলে তাকে? চল কাল ধরি।যাইহোক, পরের দিন সকালে কুমির দেখল যে বানরটিকে ধরা অত সহজ ছিল না।বানরটি শিলাস্তূপের উপর বসল এবং চকিতে দ্বীপে লাফ দিল। পাহাড়ের আড়ালে লুকিয়ে কুমির শুধু তাকে দেখল।সে তাকে না ধরেই বাড়ি ফিরল। দিনের পর দিন কেটে গেল।কুমির বহু বুদ্ধি খাটাল বানরকে ধরার জন্য, কিন্তু কোনো কিছুই কাজে লাগল না। বানরটি সবসময় তার নাগাল থেকে পালাল একদিন তার স্ত্রী বলল, “তুমি বানরটিকে ধরতে ব্যর্থ হচ্ছ, কিন্তু আমার যে তার মাংস খাবার খুব ইচ্ছা।তাহলে এবার তুমি আমার বুদ্ধি অনুসরণ করো।” কুমির বলল, “ঠিক আছে, তাহলে তোমার বুদ্ধিটা বল।” “বানরটি নদীতে জেগে থাকা শিলাস্তূপে লাফ দেয়,” স্ত্রী বলল, “আর তুমি পাহাড়ে স্থির হয়ে শুয়ে থাকবে।যখন বানরটি তোমাকে একটা পাথর ভেবে লাভ দেবে, তখন তুমি তাকে সহজেই ধরে ফেলতে পারো!” “কী বুদ্ধি তোমার! কাল আমি নিশ্চয়ই তাকে ধরব,’ আনন্দে কুমির বলল।

পরের দিন সকালে যথারীতি বানরটি পাহাড়ের উপর লাফিয়ে দ্বীপটিতে গেল।এটা দেখে কুমীরটি পাহাড়ের ওপর গেল তার লেজ ও মাথা জলে ডুবিয়ে রেখে সে পাহাড়ের উপর স্থির হয়ে শুয়ে থাকলো।শুধুমাত্র তার পিঠটায় জলের উপর ছিল। এবং তাকে পাহাড়ের একটি অংশ বলে মনে হল।পেট ভরে খাবার পর বানরটি ফেরার কথা ভাবল। সে পাহাড়টির দিকে তাকালো। “অদ্ভুত তো, পাহাড়টি এত বড় হয়েছে!” “যখন আমি এখানে এলাম তখন এটি এত বড় ছিল না। সম্ভবত সেই কুমীরটি চালাকি করেছে।সে সেখানে পাহাড়ের ভান করে শুয়ে আছে ।”

বানরটি দ্রুত সিদ্ধান্ত নিল। সে চিৎকার করলো “এই যে পাহাড়! ওহে বন্ধু মোর! আজ তোমাকে খুব বড় লাগছে।আর আজ আমাকে সব দিনের মতো অভ্যর্থনা জানালেন না।তুমি কি আমার উপর রাগ করেছ?” তার কথা শুনে কমিটি ভাবল: “এই বানরটি বোধ হয় প্রকৃতির সঙ্গে কথা বলেপাহাড়ের ভান করে তার সঙ্গে আমার কথা বলা উচিত, তা না হলে সে কিছু সন্দেহ করতে পারে।” তাই সে বলল “না, না, বন্ধু!” তুমি এসো।” “যদি তুমি রাগ না করো, তবে আমাকে তবে তোমাকে এত আলাদা লাগছে কেন?” বানরটি বলল।

এতে কুমিরটি অধৈর্য হয়ে গেল।জলের ওপরে কুমিরটি তার মাথা তুলল আর বলল,“ওরে বোকা! আমি পাহাড় নই! আমি কুমির! আমি তোমাকে শীঘ্রই খাব।”

বানরটি বুঝতে পারল যে অন্যান্য দিনের মতো সে আর ঘরে ফিরতে পারবে না।তাই সে অন্য একটা ফন্দি আঁটল। সে বলল, “বন্ধু মোর, কুমির, আমি খুব দুঃখিত। তুমি আমাকে ধরার জন্য এত কিছু করলে কেন?শুধু তুমি হাঁ করো।আমি সোজা তোমার মুখের ভিতর লাফ দিব।”

বানরটি আগে লক্ষ করেছিল।যে কুমিরটি হাঁ করলে তার চোখ দুটি সম্পূর্ণ বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। কিন্তু কুমিরটি এটা জানত না।সে বানরের প্রস্তাবে খুশি হল।সে হাঁ করে পাহাড়ের ওপর উঁচু হয়ে গেল,এবং চোখ দুটি বন্ধ হয়ে গেল।চালাক বানরটি কুমিরটির মাথায় লাফালও দ্রুত নদীর পাড়ে লাফিয়ে।গেল।
