এটা ছিল এক রোদ ঝলমলে সকাল। একদল তরুণ জঙ্গলের ধারে তাদের তীর-ধনুক নিয়ে সমবেত হলেন। কিন্তু তারা ঠিক সাধারন বালক ছিলেন না। তারা ছিলেন পাঁচ জন পাণ্ডব ও এক শতজন কৌরব।পাঁচ পাণ্ডব ও শত কৌরব ছিলেন পরস্পর খুড়তুতো জেঠতুতো ভাই।কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যে একটা ভয়ঙ্কর প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা শুরু হয়েছিল এমনকি যখন তারা মাত্র কিশোর ছিল। (Para- 1)

রাজপুত্ররা দ্রোণাচার্যের কাছ থেকে অস্ত্র বিদ্যার কৌশল শিখেছিলেন। তিনি ছিলেন ওই সময়ের শ্রেষ্ঠ যোদ্ধাদের মধ্যে অন্যতম। তিনি নিজে পরশুরামের কাছ থেকে শক্তিশালী অস্ত্র ব্যবহারের রহস্য শিখেছিলেন। পান্ডব ও কৌরবের তার কাছে দ্রুত অস্ত্রবিদ্যা শিখতে লাগলেন। তারা দ্রুত বিভিন্ন কৌশল আয়ত্ত করতে লাগলেন।সব রাজকুমাররাই সবরকম অস্ত্রচালনা শিখলেন। (Para- 2)
তাদের প্রত্যেকেরই নিজস্ব প্রিয় অস্ত্র ছিল। দুর্যোধন এবং ভীমের পছন্দের অস্ত্র ছিল গদা। যুধিষ্ঠিরের প্রিয় অস্ত্র ছিল বর্শা। অর্জুন মুগ্ধ ছিলেন তীর ধনুকে। দুই জমজ ভাই নকুল সহদেব ছিলেন তরবারিতে স্বচ্ছন্দ।(Para- 3)
গুরু তার সব শিশুকে সমানভাবে সমাদর করতেন। কিন্তু তিনি অর্জুনকে বেশি ভালবাসতেন কারণ অর্জুন গভীর মনোযোগের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধের কৌশল শিখতেন। শীঘ্রই তিনি সকলের মধ্যে শ্রেষ্ঠ ধনুর্ধর হয়ে উঠলেন।দুর্যোধন ও তার ভাই দুঃশাসন তা মোটেই পছন্দ করতেন না। নিরবে পান্ডবদের বিরুদ্ধে একটা অসন্তোষ তাদের মনে হতে লাগলো। একদিন তারা তাদের গুরুর অর্জুনে-প্রীতিকে প্রকাশ্যে সমালোচনা করলেন। তারা বললেন যে তারাও ধনুর্বিদ্যায় কোন অংশে অদক্ষ নয়। তাদের এই সমালোচনার জবাবে গুরু দ্রোণাচার্য তাদের মধ্য থেকে শ্রেষ্ঠ ধনুর্ধরকে বেছে নেওয়ার জন্য একটি পরীক্ষার আয়োজন করলেন। (Para- 4)
ওই নির্দিষ্ট দিনে গুরু দ্রোণাচার্য সকল শিষ্যকে আশ্রম এর নিকটে জঙ্গলের ধারে সমবেত হতে বললেন। একটি কাঠের পাখির সুস্পষ্টভাবে চোখে একে তিনি সেটিকে একটি গাছের উপর রাখলেন। (Para- 5)

গুরু তার সকল শিশুদের দেখে বললেন, “দেখো, বৎসগণ, একটি কাঠের পাখি দূরে ওই গাছের উপরে বসে আছে। তোমাদের ওই পাখির ঠিক চোখটিকে লক্ষ্যভেদ করতে হবে। তোমরা সব প্রস্তুত আছো তো?” প্রত্যেককেই সম্মতি জানালো। প্রথমে সর্বজ্যেষ্ঠ যুধিষ্ঠিরকে ডাকা হল তার ক্ষমতা প্রদর্শনের জন্য। যুধিষ্ঠির যখন প্রস্তুত, দ্রোণাচার্য জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “ যুধিষ্ঠির, বল কি দেখতে পাচ্ছো।” যুধিষ্ঠির অকপটে উত্তর দিলেন, “ গুরুদেব, আমি আপনাকে, গাছকে, আমার চারপাশের লোককে আর পাখিটাকে দেখতে পাচ্ছি!” দ্রোণাচার্য বললেন, “ ঠিক আছে। তীর-ধনুক রেখে চলে যাও।” যুধিষ্ঠির অবাক হলেন, কিন্তু তিনি গুরুর কথা মেনে নিলেন। তিনি নিঃশব্দে, কোন প্রশ্ন না করে ফিরে গেলেন তাঁর ভাইদের কাছে। (Para- 6)
অব্যবহিত পরে দুর্যোধনের পালা এলো। দ্রোণাচার্য জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “ আচ্ছা! কৌরবজ্যেষ্ঠ, তোমার কাছে কি জানতে পারি এই মুহূর্তে তুমি কি দেখতে পাচ্ছো?” দুর্যোধন উত্তর দিলেন, “ গুরুদেব, আমি দেখতে পাচ্ছি পাখি, গাছ, পাতা, ফল আর অন্য একটি পাখি…” কিন্তু তিনি কথা শেষ করার আগেই দ্রোণাচার্য বললেন, “ তুমি যেতে পারো!” দূর্যোধন এতে ক্রুদ্ধ হলেন। তিনি তীর ধনুক ছুঁড়ে ফেলে দিয়ে একপাশে দাঁড়িয়ে রইলেন। (Para- 7)
একই প্রশ্ন করা হলো ভীম, নকুল, সহদেব ও অন্যদের। তাদের কাছ থেকেও দ্রোণাচার্য একই উত্তর পেলেন যেমনটি পেয়েছিলেন যুধিষ্ঠির ও দুর্যোধনের কাছ থেকে। শেষে, অর্জুনের পালা এলো। তিনি তার তীর-ধনুক নিয়ে প্রস্তুত হলেন। গরুর তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “ ওহে অর্জুন তুমি কি আমাকে বলবে তুমি কি দেখতে পাচ্ছো?” “আমি একমাত্র পাখির চোখই দেখতে পাচ্ছি,” উত্তরে অর্জুন বললেন লক্ষ্যবস্তুর দিক থেকে তার দৃষ্টি না ফিরিয়ে। (Para- 8)

“তুমি কি গাছ, আকাশ বা ডালপালা যেখানে পাখিটা বসে আছে দেখতে পাচ্ছ না?” তার গুরু জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন। “না গুরুদেব, যা আমি শুধু দেখতে পাচ্ছি সেটা পাখির চোখ, আর কিছু না,” তীর ধনুক দৃঢ়ভাবে তাক করে অর্জুন বললেন। এখন দ্রোণাচার্য খুব খুশি হলেন। তিনি অর্জুনকে তার গভীর মনোসংযোগের জন্য প্রশংসা করতে লাগলেন। হাসিমুখে অর্জুনকে দ্রোণাচার্য বললেন, “ লক্ষ্যভেদ করো!” ধনুকের তীব্র টংকারের শব্দ তীর ধনুক থেকে তীব্র বেগে বের হয়ে পাখির চোখ বন্ধ করলো। (Para- 9)
দ্রোণাচার্য তখন অন্যান্য রাজকুমারদের দিকে ফিরে তাকালেন। তিনি বললেন, “ তোমরা কি এই পরীক্ষার কারণটা বুঝতে পেরেছ?” সর্বদা মনে রেখো, যখন তোমরা কোন কিছু লক্ষ্য করবে সর্বদা লক্ষ্য বস্তুর দিকে নজর দেবে, অন্য কিছুর দিকে না। একমাত্র গভীর মনোযোগই লক্ষ্যবস্তুতে আঘাত হানতে পারে। তোমরা সবাই অন্য কিছু দেখতে পারছিলে যেমন, গাছ, ফল, পাতা, আর লোকজন কারণ তোমরা তোমাদের দেওয়া কাজটির দিকে মনোযোগ দাওনি। শুধুমাত্র অর্জুনই প্রকৃতপক্ষে মনঃসংযোগ করেছিল। এখন তোমরা জানতে পারলে কেন অর্জুন সেরা ছাত্র!” দ্রোণাচার্যের পরীক্ষাটি কৌরবদের নীরব করে দিয়েছিল এবং সবাই বুঝতে পারলেন অর্জুন সত্যিই সেরা ধনুর্ধর। (Para- 10)
