একদা এক সময় এক ধনী ব্যবসায়ী একটি বড় অট্টালিকায় তার তিন মেয়েকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে বসবাস করত। প্রত্যেক মেয়েরাই খুব সুন্দর সুন্দরী ছিল। কনিষ্ঠতম মেয়ে ছিল বেল্লে। সে তার সৌন্দর্য এবং বিবেক সম্পন্ন হওয়ার জন্য যথেষ্ট পরিচিত ছিল। অন্যদিকে তার দিদিরা ছিল যথেষ্ট স্বার্থপর এবং দুষ্টু প্রকৃতির।

কিন্তু তাদের ভাগ্য শীঘ্রই পরিবর্তন হয়ে গেল। ব্যবসা এটি এক বিশাল সামুদ্রিক ঝড়ে সমুদ্রের মধ্যে তার সমস্ত সম্পত্তি হারিয়ে ফেলল। সেজন্য সে এবং তার মেয়েরা একটি ছোট্ট খামারবাড়িতে গ্রামের মধ্যে বসবাস করতে শুরু করল। তাদেরকে কঠোর পরিশ্রম করতে হতো জীবনধারণের জন্য। কয়েক বছর পরে সেই ব্যবসায়ীর শুনলো যে তার ব্যবসায়ী জাহাজের একটি বন্দরে ফিরে এসেছে। কোনরকম ভাবে ওই জাহাজটি সেই প্রচন্ড সামুদ্রিক ঝড় থেকে বেরিয়ে আসতে পেরেছিল। সেজন্য ব্যবসায়ী ঠিক করল যে সে শহরে যাবে এটা দেখবার জন্য যে তার ওই জাহাজের কোন মূল্যবান কোন জিনিস আছে কিনা।

শহরে যাওয়ার আগে সে তার মেয়েদের জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “তোমরা কি চাও আমি যখন ফিরব তোমাদের জন্য কোন উপহার নিয়ে আসব?” তা দুই বড় মেয়ে মণিমাণিক্য এবং সুন্দর জামা কাপড়ের কথা বলল কিন্তু বেল্লে বলল,” বাবা আমাকে কথা দাও তুমি আমার জন্য এমন একটা দুর্লভ গোলাপ ফুল নিয়ে আসবে যে দুর্লভ গোলাপ ফুলটি দেশের এই প্রান্তে জন্মায় না” তাদের অন্যদের প্রতি রাজি হয়ে ব্যবসায়ী টি শহরের উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা দিল। যখন সে শহরে পৌছালো সে দেখল প্রচন্ড হতাশাগ্রস্ত হয়ে জেতার জাহাজের যে মালপত্র গুলো ছিল সেগুলো কে বাজেয়াপ্ত করা হয়েছে তার ঋণ পরিশোধ করার জন্য।

যখন বাড়ি ফিরছিল বণিক টি একটি বনের মধ্যে তার পথ হারিয়ে ফেলল। আসর খোঁজে এসে একটি আলোচনা করা রাজপ্রাসাদের কাছাকাছি এলো এবং সেখানে প্রবেশ করল। ভিতরে সে দেখল টেবিলের উপরে খাদ্য এবং পানীয় পরিপূর্ণ রয়েছে তার দেখে মনে হল যেন এই রাজপ্রাসাদের কোন অদৃশ্য মালিক এগুলোকে আপাতত ভাবে টেবিলের উপরে সাজিয়ে রেখেছে । বণিক টিসি উপহার গুলি গ্রহণ করল তার প্রাণ ভরে খেলো এবং রাত্রিটি ওই প্রাসাদেই কাটাল।

পরের দিন সকালবেলা যখন বোন একটি চলে যাবে ঠিক করছে ঠিক সেই সময় একটি গোলাপ ফুলের বাগান দেখতে পেল এবং হঠাৎ করে তার ছোট মেয়ে কথা বেল্লের ইচ্ছের কথা মনে পড়ে গেল। সবথেকে সুন্দরতম গোলাপ ফুলটি তোলার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই সৈনিকটি হঠাৎ করে একটি ভয়ানক কুৎসিত আকৃতির পশুর মুখোমুখি হলো। সেই পশুটি ব্যবসায়টিকে বলল,

“গতরাত্রে তুমি তুমি ক্ষুধার্ত এবং আশ্রয়দান ছিলে। আমি তোমাকে খাদ্য পানীয় এবং স্বচ্ছন্দ দিয়েছি। এখন তুমি আমার সব থেকে মূল্যবান সম্পত্তি নিয়ে চলে যাওয়ার চেষ্টা করছো আমার আতিথেয়তা গ্রহণ করবার পরে। তোমাকে অবশ্যই তোমার এই আচরণের জন্য মরতে হবে!” বণিক টি তাকে মুক্ত করে দেওয়ার জন্য কাকুতি-মিনতি করতে লাগলো। বন একটি যুক্তি দিয়ে বলল যে সেই গোলাপ ফুলটি তুলেছে তার ছোট মেয়েকে, বেলে কে উপহার দেবে বলে। অবশেষে পশুটি রাজি হল ,” সে বলল ঠিক আছে তুমি তোমার ছোট মেয়ে বেল্লের জন্য এই গোলাপ ফুলটি নিয়ে যেতে পারো কিন্তু হয় তোমাকে অথবা তোমার ছোট মেয়েকে আমার সঙ্গে এসে আমার রাজপ্রাসাদে থাকতে হবে।“

এই শব্দটি শুনে এবং একটি মনমরা হয়ে গেল কিন্তু তবুও এই সত্যটি গ্রহণ করল। পশুটি তাকে রাস্তা দেখিয়ে দিলো এবং তার সঙ্গে আরো অনেক মণিমাণিক্য এবং সুন্দর সুন্দর জামা কাপড় মেয়েদের জন্য দিল এবং জোর দিয়ে বলে দিল জেলে যেন তার এই রাজপ্রাসাদের নিজের ইচ্ছে আসে। বন একটি বাড়ীতে পৌঁছার পর এই এই গোপন কথাটি বেলালের কাছ থেকে গোপন রাখবার চেষ্টা করল কিন্তু বেল্লে কোন রকম ভাবে এই গোপন কথাটি জানতে পারল এবং নিজের ইচ্ছে অনুসারে সেই প্রশ্নটি রাজপ্রাসাদে গেল। প্রসূতি তাকে জাঁকজমকপূর্ণ সহকারে রাজপ্রাসাদের গ্রহণ করল এবং তাকে বলল,” তুমি এই রাজপ্রাসাদের গৃহকর্ত্রী এবং আমি তোমার চাকর।“

বেশ কয়েক মাস ধরে বেল্লে পশুটির রাজপ্রাসাদে বিলাসবহুল ভাবে জীবন-যাপন কাটাতে লাগলো আর অদৃশ্য ভৃত্যরা তার প্রয়োজন এর সাহায্যে এগিয়ে আসতো এবং অন্তহীন প্রাচুর্যতার মনোরঞ্জন করত আর অন্তহীনভাবে সুন্দর পোশাক সরবরাহ করতো। ঘটনাক্রমে বেল্লে গৃহ কাতর হয়ে পড়ল এবং তার পরিবারের সঙ্গে দেখা করতে যাবার জন্য পশুটিকে অনুরোধ করল। পশুটি বলল যে সে যেতে দেবে ঠিকই কিন্তু ঠিক এক সপ্তাহের মধ্যে তাকে আবার এই রাজপ্রাসাদে ফিরে আসতে হবে।

বেলে এতে রাজী হয়ে গেল এবং একটি মায়াবী আয়না আর একটি আংটি হাতে নিয়ে সে বাড়ির উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা হলো। আয়না তাকে দেখিয়ে দেবে তার অবর্তমানে পশুটির দুর্গে কি ঘটতে চলেছে আর আংটিটা তাকে তৎক্ষনাৎ ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে যাবে যদি বেল্লে সেই আংটিটা কে তার আঙ্গুলের চারপাশে তিনবার ঘুরিয়ে নেয়।

তার বড় বোনেরা চমৎকার পোশাক ও লাবণ্য দেখে চমকে উঠলো এবং তার দুর্গে সুখের জীবন তাদেরকে ঈর্ষাকাতর করে তুলল। পশুটির কাছে কোন একটি নির্দিষ্ট দিনে তার ফিরে যাবার কথা শুনে তার বড় বোনেরা ঠিক করল আরো একদিন বেশি থাকার জন্য বেল্লা কে অনুরোধ করবে। এমনকি তারা চোখে পেঁয়াজের ঝাঁজ দিয়ে দেখাতে চাইল যে তাদের চোখের জল চলে এসেছে। গোপনে তারা আশা করছিল যে বেলের প্রতিশ্রুতি ভঙ্গ হলে পশুটি তার উপর রেগে যাবে এবং তাকে জ্যান্ত মেরে ফেলবে। বেলের হৃদয় তার বোনেদের ভালোবাসার অভিনয়ে আলোড়িত হয়ে গেল এবং সে থেকে যেতে রাজি হল।

দুর্গে ফিরে আসার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বেলে দেখতে পেল যে পশুটি প্রায় মৃত। বেলে পশুটিকে ধরে কাঁদতে লাগলো এটা বলে যে সে তাকে কত ভালোবাসতো। যেইমাত্র বেলের চোখের জল পশুটিকে স্পর্শ করল সেই পশুটি তৎক্ষণাৎ একজন সুদর্শন রাজপুত্রের পরিণত হল। সেই যুবরাজ বেল্লেকে কে বলল যে অনেকদিন আগে এক পরী তাকে অভিশাপ দিয়ে এই কুৎসিত চেহারার পশুতে পরিণত করেছিল যখন সেই যুবরাজ সেই পরীকে বৃষ্টির মধ্যে তার রাজপ্রাসাদে ঢুকতে বারণ করেছিল এবং তার এই কুৎসিত চেহারা সত্ত্বেও যদি তোকে কেউ সত্যি কারের ভালবাসে তখনই অভিশাপটি দূর হবে। তারপর সেই যুবরাজ বেলেকে বিবাহ করল এবং তারা তারপর থেকে সুখে শান্তিতে জীবন যাপন করতে লাগলো।
