আর তার ভর একেবারে অমূলক (ভিত্তিহীন) ছিল না। ছেলেরা বাস্তবিকই ভালো ছিল না। তারা আরও এক বছর সেই বাড়িতে থাকল, নিজেদের মধ্যে ঝগড়া করল আর অন্য একটি বাড়িতে বাস করার জন্য চলে গেল। এক বছর পরে অন্য একটি পরিবার ভাড়াটে হিসেবে এল। যে মুহূর্তে তারা ভেলানকে দেখল, তারা বলল “বুড়ো মালি? কোনো চালাকি করার চেষ্টা করো না। তুমি কেমন লোক তা আমরা জানি। যদি তুমি ঠিক ঠিক কাজ না-করো (ভালো আচরণ না-করো) তাহলে আমরা তোমাকে বরখাস্ত করব।” ভেলানের জীবন অসহ্য মনে হল। এই লোকগুলির বাগানের প্রতি কোনো মায়া (ভালোবাসা বা শ্রদ্ধা) ছিল না।

যাই হোক, শীঘ্রই সৌভাগ্য তাকে অনুগ্রহ করল। ভাড়াটিয়ারা চলে গেল। বাড়িটি কয়েক বছর তালাচাবি বন্ধ থাকল। মৃত মালিকের একজন ছেলে মাঝে মাঝে আসত আর বাগানটি পরিদর্শন করত। ক্রমে ক্রমে তাও বন্ধ হয়ে গেল। তারা ভেলান-এর কাছেই বাড়ির চাবিটি দিয়ে গেল। মাঝে মাঝে একজন সম্ভাব্য ভাড়াটে আসত, বাড়িটি খোলা হত, আর চলে যেত এই কথা বলে যে বাড়িটি ধ্বংসাবশেষে পরিণত হয়েছে। এক বছর পর অন্য একজন ভাড়াটে এল, তারপর আর একজন, আর তারপর তৃতীয় জন। কেউই কয়েক মাসের বেশি থাকল না। আর তারপর বাড়িটি ভুতুড়ে বাড়ির খ্যাতি লাভ অর্জন করল।

যখন তার ঝোঁক চাপত (বছরে প্রায় একবার) সে বাড়িটি খুলত, আর মেঝে ঝাঁট দিত আর ঘষে মেজে পরিস্কার করত। কিন্তু ক্রমে ক্রমে সে এই অভ্যাসও ছেড়ে দিল।
সে এত বুড়ো হয়ে গেল যে আর এসব ব্যাপার নিয়ে মাথা ঘামাত না। কোনোরকম পরিবর্তন না-হয়ে বছরের পর বছর পার হয়ে গেল। এটি পরিচিত হল ‘ভুতুড়ে বাড়ি’ নামে, আর লোকেরা বাড়িটিকে এড়িয়ে চলল। এ ব্যাপারে ভেলান অভিযোগ করার মতো কিছু দেখতে পেল না। এটি তার পক্ষে চমৎকার মানিয়ে গেল।
