Verbs

Verbs are divided into two parts according to the rules of their spelling and change of form when forming past and past participle forms of verbs.

  • Strong Verb or Irregular Verb
  • Weak Verb or Regular verb

Strong Verb or Irregular Verb

When the Verbs are made in past and past participle form changing the vowel between the verbs, they are called either a Strong verb or an Irregular verb. But sometimes these verbs are made past and past participles adding ‘-en ’, ‘-n’, or ‘-ne’ at the end.

 There are some verbs that have three different forms.

Weak Verbs or Regular Verbs

When the Verbs are made in past and past participle form adding ‘- d ’, ‘- ed’ ‘ – t ’, at the end of them, they are called Weak Verbs or Regular Verbs.

There are some verbs that follow both the rules of Weak and Strong verbs to make Past and Past participles. They are called mixed verbs.

If there is ‘ e ’ at the end of a verb, then add ‘-d’ to make Past and Past.

Example: 

  • Move – Moved – Moved.

 If there is ‘-y’ at the end of a verb and if there is a vowel before it then usually –ed is added to make Past, Past Participle (‘-ied’ is not used).  

Example:

  • Stay – stayed – stayed.

To have Past and Past participle of verbs which have -y at the end and Consonant before it. ‘– ied’ is added lifting ‘-y’.

Example:

  • cry – cried – cried.

To have Past and Past participles of verbs that have a consonant at the end and a vowel before it, the last consonant will be used twice when using ‘-ed’ to past and past participles.  

Example: 

Hop – hopped – hopped.
