1. Position of Prepositions

Prepositions can be used at the end of a sentence if the sentence is a question that begins with a wh- word

For example,

  • How many months have you been practising for?
  • Who/whom are you going to write to?
  • What film are you interested in?
  • Which book are you pointing to?

(a) In relative clauses also, prepositions can be shifted to the end of the clause.

  • He is the person who/whom I can turn to in need.

(In these examples, that can replace ‘who/whom/which.)

(b) Such shifting of a preposition is not possible in phrasal verbs. 

For example,

  • The matter which/that I am looking into is serious.

You cannot write this sentence as follows-

  • The matter into which I am looking is serious.

(c) The preposition can also be placed before the conjunction whom or which. 

We can write:

  • He is the person to whom I can turn in need.
  • This is the man about whom I told you yesterday.
  • The book from which I have taken this poem is Madhushala.

  • He gave me (indirect object) a book (direct object). = He gave a book to me.

  • I was busy from five to/till seven.
  • He has been repairing the machine since morning/8 a.m. etc. (point in time)
  • They have served here for ten years. (period of time)
  • We stay in our village during the summer holidays.
  • The rain stopped during the night.
  • They kept discussing the issue till/until midnight.
  • He was not seen anywhere till 7 p.m.

(g) before, after

  • You must rest after work.
  • I don’t want to hold any meeting before lunch.
