একদিন সকালে আমি মামার সঙ্গে বালিগঞ্জ গভর্নমেন্ট হাইস্কুলে গেলাম। শ্রেণিশিক্ষক আমাকে কয়েকটা প্রশ্ন উত্তর করতে এবং কয়েকটা অঙ্ক সমাধান করতে দিলেন। আমি উত্তরগুলো লিখলাম, অঙ্কগুলো সমাধান করলাম এবং সেগুলো শিক্ষককে দেখালাম। তিনি উত্তরগুলো দেখলেন এবং মাথা নাড়লেন। তার অঙ্গভঙ্গি বুঝিয়ে দিল যে আমার উত্তরগুলো সঠিক ছিল এবং এভাবে আমি স্কুলে ভর্তি হলাম।

আমাদের বিদ্যালয়ে বেশ কিছু সংখ্যক ভালো শিক্ষক ছিলেন। বি.ডি. রায় আমাদিগকে ইংরেজি পড়াতেন। তিনি কৃশকায় ব্যক্তি হলেন কিন্তু যাতে আমরা ইংরেজি নির্ভুলভাবে উচ্চারণ করি – সে বিষয়ে নিশ্চিত হতে তিনি প্রচুর যত্ন নিতেন। একদিন তিনি আমাদিগকে ‘ঈশপের গল্প’ থেকে ‘ষাঁড় এবং ব্যাং’ গল্পটি বলেছিলেন। আমাদের গল্পটি বলার আগে ‘the’ এর উচ্চারণ কীভাবে তার পরবর্তী শব্দ স্বরবর্ণ অথবা ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ দিয়ে শুরু তার উপর নির্ভর করে তিনি সেটা আমাদিগকে শিখালেন। খুব সুন্দর হাতের লেখার জন্য আমাদের হেডপণ্ডিত ভট্টাচার্য স্যারের কথা আমার খুব মনে পড়ে। অন্য কেউ ব্ল্যাক বোর্ডে অধিকতর সুন্দরভাবে বাংলা লিখতে পারে বলে আমার মনে হয় না।

আমি খেলাধুলায় খুব ভালো ছিলাম না। কিন্তু আমি খুব সুন্দরভাবে আঁকতে পারতাম। ফলে আমি আমাদের আঁকার শিক্ষক আশুবাবুর সবচেয়ে প্রিয় ছিলাম। বাৎসরিক পুরস্কার বিতরণী উৎসবের জন্য হলঘর’ সাজানোর দায়িত্ব তাঁকে দেওয়া হত। তিনিও মিউজিক ড্রইং’ নামক একটা ইভেন্ট’ পরিচালনা করেছিলেন। এই ইভেন্টের জন্য একটা ব্ল্যাকবোর্ডে  এবং টেবিলের উপর রঙিন চক্ থাকবে। একজন ছাত্র গান গাইবে এবং আর একজন ছাত্র গানের সারবস্তু রেখায় এবং রঙে ধরে রাখার চেষ্টা করবে [ব্ল্যাক বোর্ডের উপর ছবি আঁকবে]। এইভাবে এরূপ অনেক আনন্দায়ক এবং স্মরণীয় ঘটনার মাধ্যমে আমি আমার বিদ্যালয় জীবন ছয় বছর কাটিয়েছিলাম।

বিদ্যালয় ত্যাগ করার দশ বছর পরে সম্ভবত প্রাক্তন ছাত্রদের পুনর্মিলনে যোগ দিতে মাত্র একবার সেখানে গেছিলাম। যখন আমি হলঘরে প্রবেশ করলাম আমি বিস্ময়ের সঙ্গে লক্ষ্য করলাম যে আমি এটাকে চিনতে পারলাম না। যে হলঘরটিকে আগে প্রচণ্ড বড়ো  মনে হত তখন সেটিকে সেইরকম বড় মনে হল না। কেবল হলঘর নয়’ এমনকি দরজা শ্রেণিকক্ষ বেঞ এবং বারান্দা অনেক ছোট মনে হল। এই অনুভূতি হওয়া স্বাভাবিক ছিল যদিও যখন আমি স্কুল ছেড়েছিলাম তখন আমি পাঁচ ফুট তিন ইঞ্চি ছিলাম,

আর এখন আমি প্রায় সাড়ে ছয় ফুট হয়েছি।এই বছর গুলোতে আমি যথেষ্ট বেড়ে উঠেছি কিন্তু আমার স্কুল ততটা বাড়েনি। তখন থেকে আমি কখনও স্কুলে ফিরে যাইনি।
