Modal Verbs are auxiliary verbs that are used before Principal verbs in English. Modal Verbs can be used only in the Simple Present and Simple Past Tense.

Can, May, Should, May, and Must, are called Modals in English Grammar. They are also called Modal Auxiliary Verbs in English Grammar. 

Modals are always followed by the base form of the main verb.
