Conjunctions for Class 4 Rules

Conjunctions are words that connect and join different parts of sentences. They include coordinating conjunctions like “and” and “but,” as well as subordinating conjunctions such as “because” and “if.” Understanding the rules of using conjunctions helps students create well-structured and cohesive sentences.

Examples of Conjunctions

We use conjunctions to join words, groups of words or sentences. Some common conjunctions are and, but, or, so, yet, when, if and because.

Use of AND

We use and to join words or groups of words that are similar or when their meanings are related.

  1. I will buy fruits and vegetables in the market.
  2. I will go to the market and buy vegetables.
  3. I like apples, mangoes and grapes the best.

And’ is used for similar in meaning

Use of BUT

We use but to join words or groups of words that are different, or things that do not go together.

  1. She was clever but lazy.
  2. The flat is big but it isn’t airy.

But’ is used for opposite in meaning

Use of OR

We use or when we want to talk about choosing from two alternatives.

  1. Do you like vanilla ice cream or chocolate?
  2. You can drink tea or coffee with breakfast.

Or’ is used for alternative in meaning

Use of SO

We use so to show cause and result.

  1. I didn’t work very hard in the first term, so I didn’t score high marks.
  2. Sitara is unwell, so she did not come to school.

So’ is used for cause/result

Use of BECAUSE

We use because to give a reason or to offer an explanation.

  1. I went to bed early because I was very tired.
  2. Tasneem missed the bus because she woke up late.

Because’ is used for reason.

Use of YET

We use yet to show two opposite things.

  1. The athlete hurt his foot yet he completed the race.
  2. He started late yet he finished his work on time.

Use of IF

We use if to join two sentences where one sentence is the condition for the other.

  1. If I am late, I will miss the film.
  2. If Seema plays well today, the team will win.

If’ is used for condition.

Use of WHEN

We use when to join two sentences when the two actions or states are related in time.

  1. When I see my friends, I say hello to them.
  2. I will get ready when the cab is here.

When’ is used for time.

Position of the conjunctions

Some conjunctions (if, because, and when) can be placed at different positions within a sentence.

  • I was tired because I had run five miles in the morning.
  • Because I had run five miles in the morning, I was tired.
