About the Text:

Intizar Hussain wrote a beautiful short story called “Badal” in the Urdu language. Rakshanda Jalil translated “Badal” as “Clouds”. In this story, we see how a boy wandered in search of clouds as if someone had lost his child. The boy wanted it to rain in presence of him but still, Sky was clear. But it was raining unfortunately when he was absent at that place. The story tells us how it was running in the absence of the boy and how the boy was disappointed and felt glad and relaxed also at the end of the story.  

About the Author:

Intizr Hussain was born in 1923. He was a famous Pakistani writer who wrote many short stories and novels in Urdu. He has received many awards in Pakistan, India, and the Middle East.

He wandered far in search of the clouds, down winding paths and alleys, till he saw a grass-cutter coming from the other direction, a bundle of freshly cut grass balanced on his head. He stopped the man and asked, “Have you seen the clouds there?”
“Clouds?”

বঙ্গানুবাদ:- সে মেঘের খোঁজে উদ্দেশ্যহীন ভাবে ঘুরে বেড়াচ্ছিল ওই বাঁকা পথ দিয়ে এবং সরু গলি পথ দিয়ে যতক্ষণ না পর্যন্ত সে একটি পুরনো মাটির বাড়ির কাছে এসে পৌঁছল। সেখানে থেকে এসে তারপর একটা মাটির পথ দিয়ে হাটতে লাগল। সে দেখল যে একজন ঘাস কাঠুরে অন্য দিক থেকে সদ্য কাটা ঘাসের বোঝা মাথায় নিয়ে ভারসাম্য রক্ষা করে তার দিকে এগিয়ে আসছে। সে লোকটিকে থামালো এবং জিজ্ঞাসা করলো, “ওখানে কি তুমি মেঘগুলোকে দেখেছো?”

He was disappointed to see that the grass-cutter was still mystified. He walked on until he came upon a farmer ploughing his field. He asked him the same question, “Did the clouds come here?”

বঙ্গানুবাদ:- সে খুব হতাশাগ্রস্ত হল এটা দেখে যে সেই ঘাস কাঠুরে টি তখনো পর্যন্ত বিভ্রান্ত অবস্থায় ছিল। সে হাঁটতে আরম্ভ করল যতক্ষণ না পর্যন্ত সে একটি চাষির কাছে যে মাঠে লাঙ্গল করছিল। সে তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করল একই প্রশ্ন, “ মেঘগুলোকে এখানে এসেছিল?”

The farmer, too, couldn’t make sense of the question. “Clouds?” he asked.
“Yes, clouds.”

বঙ্গানুবাদ:- চাষী ও তার প্রশ্নের অর্থ বুঝতে পারল না। “মেঘ?”, সে জিজ্ঞাসা করলো।

He was asking after the clouds like a man who has lost a child and asks wayfarers if they have seen a child wandering. Perhaps the clouds, too, were lost children and he was going around asking people about them. But no one could give him a satisfactory answer.

বঙ্গানুবাদ:- সে মেঘের কথা এমনভাবে জিজ্ঞাসা করছিল যেন মনে হচ্ছিল কোন মানুষ তার ছোট বাচ্চাকে হারিয়ে ফেলেছে আর সহপাঠীর যাত্রীদের জিজ্ঞাসা করছে যে ওই বাচ্চাটিকে ঘুরে বেড়াতে দেখেছে কিনা। সম্ভবত মেঘগুলো ওই হারিয়ে যাওয়া বাচ্চাদের মত এবং সে লোকজনদেরকে জিজ্ঞাসা করেই চলছিল সেই মেঘ সম্পর্কে। কিন্তু কেউ তাকে কোনো সন্তোষজনক উত্তর দিতে পারল না।

Dejectedly, he washed his hands and face, ate his breakfast, and left home. But the question still haunted him: Where did the clouds go?

He remembered what he had seen the night before clouds gathering in the dark sky. But when he went to sleep, the sky was clear and full of stars. When he awoke again, he had no idea of the time. All he knew was that it was the middle of the night. Up there in the sky, the clouds were rumbling. In the occasional flashes of lightning, they were dense and black. It looked as if it will be raining. Rain will have ruined his sleep, he knew. When he got up in the morning, he was amazed. The sky was clear and empty! Not a trace of rain in the courtyard. He was surprised and saddened-the clouds had moved across the skies without shedding a drop of rain.

বঙ্গানুবাদ :- তার মনে ছিল সে গতরাত্রে কি দেখেছিল – মেঘ গুলো কালো আকাশে জমা হয়েছিল।কিন্তু সে যখন শুতে গেলো আকাশ পরিষ্কার ছিল এবং নক্ষত্র ভরা ছিল।যখন সে আবার ঘুম থেকে জেগে উঠেছিল তার ধারণা ছিল না সে তখন সময় কটা। শুধু সে এইটুকুনি জানতো যে সেটা ছিল মধ্যরাত্রি। সেই সময় আকাশের মধ্যে মেঘগুলো গুড়গুড় শব্দ করছিল। মাঝে মাঝে আলোর ঝলকানি দেখা যাচ্ছিল। সেই মেঘগুলো ছিলো ঘন এবং কালো। তার যেন মনে হয়েছিল বৃষ্টি হবে। বৃষ্টি তার ঘুম কে নষ্ট করে দেবে। সে জানতো।যখন সে সকাল বেলায় ঘুম থেকে উঠল সে অবাক হয়ে গেল। আকাশ পরিষ্কার ছিল এবং খালি ছিল। উঠোনের মধ্যে কোন বৃষ্টির চিহ্ন ছিল না। সে বিস্মিত এবং দুঃখিত – বৃষ্টির একটি ফোঁটা না ফেলে মেঘগুলি আকাশ জুড়ে চলে গেছে।

And it saddened him to think that he had fallen asleep. Had he stayed awake, perhaps, the clouds would not have disappeared like that. It would have been the season’s first rainfall.

বঙ্গানুবাদ :- এবং সে যে ঘুমিয়ে পড়েছেন তা ভেবে সে দুঃখিত হয়েছিল। সে জেগে থাকলে হয়তো মেঘগুলো এভাবে অদৃশ্য হয়ে যেত না। এটা মরসুমের প্রথম বৃষ্টি হতো।

The month of the rains was slipping away. He looked up once again at the skies. Not a single patch of cloud. The sun beat down on his head from a clear sky. In the fierce heat, he walked between the fields. His body was on fire, throat dry. After crossing several fields, he saw a large tree in whose shade a Persian wheel turned gently. It was like he had reached an oasis in the middle of a desert. He reached the shelter of the tree and splashed the cool water from the Persian wheel on his dusty feet. Then he washed his hands and face and drank his fill.

বঙ্গানুবাদ :- বৃষ্টির মাসগুলো যেনো তাড়াতাড়ি চলে যাচ্ছিল। সে আরো একবার আকাশের দিকে দেখল। মেঘের কোন চিহ্ন আকাশে দেখতে পেল না। সূর্য তার মাথার উপরে প্রচন্ড জোরে কিরণ দিচ্ছিল এবং আকাশ পরিষ্কার ছিল। এই প্রচন্ড উত্তাপে সে মাঠের মধ্য দিয়ে হাঁটছিল।তার শরীর প্রচন্ড উত্তপ্ত হয়েছিল এবং তার গলা শুকিয়ে গিয়েছিল।কয়েকটি মাঠ অতিক্রান্ত হওয়ার পর এসে দেখল একটা বিশাল বড় গাছ যার ছায়ায় পারসিক চক্র গুলো আস্তে আস্তে ঘুরছে।সে গাছের আশ্রয়ে পৌঁছাল এবং পারসিক চক্র থেকে ঠান্ডা জল তার নিজের শরীরে ছেটালো এবং ধুলোমাখা পায়ে জল দিল। তারপর সেই সেই ঠান্ডা জল প্রাণভরে হাত দিয়ে খেলো এবং হাত মুখ ধুলো।

বঙ্গানুবাদ :- পুনরুজ্জীবিত হয়ে সে চারি দিকে তাকালো। একজন বয়স্ক লোক একটা দেওয়ালের পাশে পারসিক চক্রের কাছে বসে রয়েছে। সে বৃদ্ধ লোকটির দিকে তাকালো কিছু একটা বল বার চেষ্টা করল কিন্তু ইতঃস্তত বোধ করল। অবশেষে লোকটিকে জিজ্ঞাসা করেই ফেলল , “মেঘগুলোকে এখানে এসেছিল?”

The old man looked closely at him and said, “Son, when the clouds come, the earth and the sky know of their coming.

বঙ্গানুবাদ :- বৃদ্ধ ঘনিষ্টভাবে সেই ছেলেটির দিকে তাকালো এবং বললো ,” বাবা, যখন মেঘেরা আসে তখন পৃথিবী এবং আকাশ তাদের আসার খবর বুঝতে পারে।“

He sat there listening to his tales. Suddenly, he realized how late it was.

He walked for miles in the sun and dust. He went back by the same dirt track he had taken to come there. The sun was still fiercely hot but when he reached the mud hut, he felt a nip in the air and the earth was damp underfoot.

বঙ্গানুবাদ :- সেই রুদ্র এবং ধুলোর মধ্যে অনেকটা মাইল পথ হেটে এসেছিলো। সে ফিরে যাচ্ছিল একই পথ দিয়ে যে পথ দিয়ে সে এসেছিল এখানে। সূর্য তখনও পর্যন্ত প্রচণ্ড জোরে কিরণ দিচ্ছিল কিন্তু যখন সে কুঁড়েঘর তার কাছে পৌঁছাল সে বাতাসে একটা ঠান্ডা ঠান্ডা ভাব অনুভব করতে পারল এবং তার পায়ের তলায় মাটি টা ভেজা ছিল।

As he neared his village, he saw the roads were wet. Trees that had been standing draped in layers of dust when he had left in the morning now looked freshly bathed. He felt a wave of happiness. He hurried home. He wanted to see how fresh and clean the jamun tree in his courtyard looked.

বঙ্গানুবাদ :- যখন সে গ্রামের কাছে এলো সে দেখল যে রাস্তাগুলো ভেজা।গাছগুলো যেগুলোকে সে সকাল বেলায় যখন বাড়ি থেকে বেরিয়ে ছিল দেখেছিল ধুলোর আস্তরণ ঘেরা বলে, সেই গাছগুলোকে এখন সতেজ ভাবে জলের মাধ্যমে স্নান করা অবস্থায় দেখতে পাওয়া গেল। সে অনুভব করতে পারল তার মধ্যে একটা আনন্দের ঢেউ। সে তাড়াতাড়ি বাড়ির দিকে গেল।সে দেখতে চাইছিল যে তাদের বাড়ির উঠোনে সেই জাম গাছটা কে কতটা সতেজ এবং পরিষ্কার দেখতে লাগছে।

When he got home, he saw that the rain had changed everything. The Jamun tree stood clean and scrubbed, freshly showered, and Ammaji was saying,” That was a good shower, thank God!”

বঙ্গানুবাদ :- যখন সে বাড়ির কাছে পৌঁছাল সে দেখল যে বৃষ্টি সবকিছুকে পরিবর্তন করে দিয়েছে। জাম গাছটা যেন দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল পরিষ্কার-পরিচ্ছন্ন ধোয়ামোছা এবং সতেজ অবস্থায়, প্রচন্ড ভালো বৃষ্টি হল। এবং আম্মাজি বলছিলেন, “খুব ভালো বৃষ্টি হল, ভগবানকে ধন্যবাদ!”

Raindrops were still rolling off the leaves of the Jamun. He stood beneath the tree and let them fall on his head and face. He raised his eyes to the sky and saw it clear, without even a wisp of cloud. He had walked so far in the dust and sun in search of the clouds, and in his absence, they had come, shed their rain, and gone away!

Once two friends were passing through a forest. Suddenly a bear came their way. Being afraid one friend climbed up a tree nearby. But another friend could not climb the tree. Helpless he lay down like a dead man. He learned that bears do not touch dead bodies. The bear came near the man. The bear smelt him and thought him dead. Sometime after the bear went away. Then the other friend came down from the tree and asked him what the bear had said. The first friend replied: “Don’t trust a false friend who leaves you in danger.”

Moral: Never trust a false friend.

Suppose you have been waiting for a piece of good news. Write a paragraph in about eighty words on your experience of waiting:
the news you waited for-what you did while waiting-whether the news had come to your feelings.

Once upon a time, I was waiting for good news. This was my annual exam result. I was worried about whether I would do well in the exam. All my hopes came true when I got the good news that I came first in the class. I could not go to school that day. My mother went to fetch my exam result. I was restless all day.
