The words a, an, and the are called articles.

• We use ‘a‘ with singular nouns that begin with consonant sounds.
• We use ‘an‘ with singular nouns that begin with vowel sounds.
• We use ‘the‘ with things that are only one of a kind.

Examples:

a car, 

an apple, 

a box, 

an elephant, 

a girl.

the moon, 

the sky, 

the sun, 

the Taj Mahal, 

the Eiffel Tower, 

the book that I want, 

the box that my father gave me.

The article 'the' is also used with things that are already talked about or to talk about a particular thing.

Example:

My father gave me a book. I want the book.
