Margaret Elizabeth Noble (28 October 1867 – 13 October 1911), also known as Sister Nivedita, was a Scots-Irish social worker, author, and teacher. She met Swami Vivekananda in 1895 in London and traveled to Calcutta, India, in 1898. Vivekananda gave her the name Nivedita, meaning “Dedicated to God,” when she took a vow of Brahmacharya. She was very close to Sarada Devi and other disciples of Vivekananda. She died on 13 October 1911 in Darjeeling.

After leaving Achhabal and returning to their boats at Islamabad for final arrangements, they observed the orderly and picturesque gathering of thousands of pilgrims. These pilgrims camped in fields and swiftly set up tents and shops at each stop. The atmosphere was organized, with bustling markets offering dried fruits, milk, dahls, and rice. Monks from various orders, with their Gerrua tents, were drawn to the Swami’s influence at each campsite, engaging in deep conversations, often centered around Siva.
Despite discussions about unity between Hindus and Muslims, the pilgrimage proceeded harmoniously. The journey led through stunning landscapes as they ascended valleys, passed snowy peaks, and finally reached the Cave of Amarnath. Here, amidst a buzzing crowd and fluttering pigeons, the Swami had a profound moment of reverence, feeling as if he saw Siva himself. Outside the cave, the pilgrimage continued with simplicity and closeness to nature, culminating in the Rakhibandhan ceremony where wrists were tied with red and yellow threads. The Swami reflected on the cave’s discovery, imagining how shepherds must have stumbled upon it centuries ago. Similarly, the Master was deeply moved by the purity of an ice-pillar in the cave, seeing it as a manifestation of divine presence. Both experiences left a lasting impression on their lives.
