The bold words of each of the above sentences describe a noun. Such words are called Adjectives.
Definition of adjective:
An Adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. We can call an adjective a describing word.
Position of Adjectives:
An adjective is generally used after or before a noun or a pronoun. According to position, an adjective can be divided into two categories –
- Attributive Adjective
- Predicative Adjective.
Attributive Adjective:
When an adjective is used before a noun to describe it, the adjective is called an attributive adjective.
Example:
- He is a good ( Adj)boy ( N). – Adjective placed before a noun.
- I met a poor (Adj) man (N) .-Adjective placed before a noun.
Predicative Adjective:
When an adjective is used after a noun or a pronoun to describe it, the adjective is called a predicative adjective.
Example:
- The boy (N) is good (Adj). – Adjective placed after a noun.
- The man (N) is poor (Adj). – Adjective placed after a noun.

Types of Adjectives Class 5 English Grammar
Types of Adjectives: Adjectives can be divided into 6 categories according to their types.
Adjectives of quality
Adjectives of quality describe the quality of a noun or a pronoun.
Example:
- This is a beautiful house.
- He lives in a big mansion.
- Ishita is a dull student.
- I am able to tell the light box.
Adjective of quantity
Adjectives of quantity express the number of things but not the exact number.
Example:
- I need some money.
- Suchitra finished her whole breakfast.
- Do you want more time?
- There is no water in the jug.
Adjectives of number
Adjectives of numbers tell us the exact number of things or their order in a series of things.
Example:
- I bought two cakes.
- Twenty students are playing on the field.
- He is the second boy in the class.
- The fishermen caught five fish from the river.
Adjectives of numbers can be categorized into two.
Cardinal Number
This type of adjective only indicates numbers.
Example:
- There are two boys.
- He has four toys.
- They have nine pins.
Ordinal number
This type of adjective refers to the order. An ordinal number is always singular and the article, “the” is placed before them.
Example:
- She is the third girl in the class.
- He is the fourth boy.
- The team holds the second title in the competition.
Possessive Adjective
Possessive adjectives show us the possession of things.
Example:
- My father is a respectable man.
- Sunita loves her pet very much.
- The students went back to their classroom.
- Please return his book.
Difference between possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns.
- Possessive adjectives are placed before nouns but possessive pronouns are used after verbs or at the end of a sentence.
Example:
- Mother loved her very much.- (possessive adjective)
- The book I lost is mine.- (possessive pronoun)
Demonstrative adjectives
Demonstrative adjectives are used to point at people or things.
Example:
- Those boys are naughty.
- This kite is mine.
- That bird is hurt.
- These children live in the neighborhood.
Difference between demonstrative adjectives and demonstrative pronouns.
Demonstrative adjectives are used before nouns but demonstrative pronouns are used after verbs or at the end of a sentence.
Example:
- Those apples are rotten. (Demonstrative adjective
- I love this. (demonstrative pronoun)
Interrogative Adjectives
Interrogative adjectives are used to ask questions.
Example:
- Which pen do you want to buy?
- What colour is your new site?
- Which cities did you visit in Delhi?
Difference between interrogative adjectives and interrogative pronouns.
Interrogative adjectives are placed before nouns but interrogative pronouns are placed before verbs.
Example:
- What time do you prefer? (Interrogative adjective)
- Whose is this? ( interrogative pronoun)
